How to declutter your home: spring cleaning tips & ideas

Bents Blog – Mopping

Now that Christmas is over and we’re looking towards the warmer months, it’s the perfect time to get ahead and refresh your home with a good spring clean!

We put together some our favourite spring cleaning tips and ideas to declutter your home, let’s get started.

Start with a thorough dust and clean

Your house may have gathered a lot of dust over the last few months so get started by dusting any surfaces with a duster or microfibre cloth. Don’t forget to focus on those hard to reach areas that don’t receive much attention.

Once you’ve dusted, it’s time to wipe down all surfaces. Use a hard-working multi-purpose cleaner to make lightwork of stains and spills. For any baked-on dirt that’s hard to remove, opt for a Scrub Daddy. The textured sponge cleans the toughest messes without scratching delicate countertops or hobs.

Hoover and mop the floors

Now your surfaces are all squeaky clean, go over your floors with a vacuum so they look brand new. We recommend the Beldray Airgility Digital, a lightweight model for easy manoeuvring and a fast clean.

Once your floors are free from dirt, hair and dust you’ll need to mop. Fill a bucket with hot soapy water and get to work, just make sure to wring your mop out well to avoid excessively wet floors.

Get to grips with the kitchen

Now you’ve got the floor sparkling it’s time to move on to organising and de-cluttering, and the kitchen is a great place to start. A multifunctional hub for eating, cooking and socialising, the kitchen can be the hardest room of the house to organise.

When clearing kitchen clutter, it’s good idea to go through your collection of cutlery, utensils and dishes. Lay them out to get a good idea of everything you have, making sure to discard anything that is broken or worn. Utensil holders, sink tidies and cutlery trays are a great way to easily organise your dishware and cutlery, and at Bents we have a vast selection of organisers and kitchen storage to choose from.

Reorganise your wardrobe

When it comes to decluttering your closet, make it easier by going through clothing by type. Sort through and donate any clothes you no longer wear. Once you’ve got rid of old or damaged items, make everything smell fresh by giving your clothes a good wash. Then iron or steam your freshly washed and dried items so they’re ready for you to grab and go in the morning rush.

If you find it hard to part with clothing, try the reverse hanger trick. Simply hang all of your clothes with the clothes hanger pointing in the wrong direction. Each time you’ve worn a piece and are ready to rehang, turn the hanger the opposite way. By the end of the year, you’ll be able to see what you’ve used and which clothes haven’t been worn, making decluttering easy!

Tackle your garden

Time to tackle the garden! Just like indoors, it’s best to start your garden spring clean by having a general tidy.

Use a rake to clear dead leaves and remove any dead plants from last year. Then use a handy weed slice or weed killer to remove pesky weeds from garden paths and lawns. A garden waste bag is great way to easily collect garden weeds and dead leaves without making a mess.

Once your garden has been cleared of weeds and waste, you can start organising your tools and garden supplies.

If you have a shed, remove everything before sweeping any dirt and grime, then get to clearing out any unused items.

If you find you could do with a little more space, consider a small garden store or garden storage box.

Create a cosy feel with home fragrance

Once you’ve decluttered and your house is spotless, it’s time to add the finishing touches. Create a warm, welcoming feel with your favourite home scents. Give each room in your house a spritz with room spray and light the candles.

For all-day freshness you can use an electric oil diffuser to scent your home. Simply pick your favourite essential oils and add them to your diffuser for fragrance that lasts for hours.

Add some greenery

Bring the outdoors in with the selection of house plants from Bents. Introduce a little life to rooms by adding a mixture of succulents, cacti and monsteras. Not only do house plants make your space look good, but they can also help to purify the air and reduce humidity.
